Falls Park, Greenville

Looking for a destination with great culture, food, nature, and entertainment? Greenville has you covered!

This beautiful city has countless outdoor amenities just begging to be explored and is one of the best Southern destinations for families, pet owners, and couples. Read further to discover how to spend a perfect weekend in Greenville, South Carolina.

Arriving to Greenville

West End, Greenville

With an easy drive of just under 2.5 hours from Augusta and Atlanta, and less than 2 hours from Charlotte, Greenville is a perfect trip for a weekend escape.

You can also fly into the Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport, which is just 15 minutes from the city center.

Falls Park

The crown jewel of Greenville is undoubtedly the beautiful Falls Park. This 32-acre green space is in the center of the city and features a river, a natural waterfall, and the stunning Liberty Bridge.

There are also gardens and art installations around the park, with paved walking paths and benches, making it the perfect place to wander or to sit with a good book.

Greenville Saturday Market

Greenville Saturday Market

If possible, arrive in Greenville either on Friday or Saturday morning to experience the TD Saturday Market. On Saturday mornings from May to October, two blocks of downtown Greenville are converted to pedestrian-only traffic, and the streets are lined with local vendors.

Whether you are looking for fresh produce, baked pastries and desserts, or locally crafted home items, you’ll find it here. The best part is that vendors must be located within 100 miles of Greenville, so you’ll be hard-pressed to find more local goods all in one place.

Discover the Arts

Mice on Main, Greenvile

A major focus of Greenville is supporting the arts. Visit the Greenville County Museum of Art, which has free admission and is just steps from the city center.

There is also the popular Children’s Museum of the Upstate for an interactive experience targeted for children 12 and under. You will find countless outdoor art installations and murals scattered throughout the city.

It’s not just large artworks that have a place in Greenville. For children and children-at-heart alike, take an afternoon to go on a scavenger hunt to find the famous Mice on Main. These tiny statues are scattered throughout downtown. Grab a free clue sheet at the visitors center or at the Mast General Store for a fun afternoon search!

Shop Local

M. Judson Booksellers

Take some time to simply stroll down Main Street to do a bit of shopping. If you encounter a few summer showers as I did, drop into the charming M. Judson Booksellers to get lost in a book while enjoying a coffee or a glass of wine.

No visit to Greenville is complete without a visit to the Mast General Store. Stepping inside is like stepping back in time into an old country kitchen. You’ll find a wide variety of old-timey sweets, knickknacks, and also a good selection of outerwear and footwear.

Ayers Leather Shop is also historic, open since 1950. Located on West North Street, the shop specializes in unique, hard-to-find leather gifts.

The Swamp Rabbit Trail

An outdoor experience in Greenville that is simply a must-do is the Swamp Rabbit Trail. Following the scenic Reedy River, the Swamp Rabbit Trail spans 28 miles and is fully paved, making it an ideal activity for bicycle enthusiasts. There are multiple bike rental companies with close access to the trail. I rented from Reedy Rides, and they were professional and really helpful.

Walking the route is also very approachable. The trail is thoughtfully designed for pedestrians and our furry friends, with ample signage, crosswalks, public restrooms, and pet waste stations throughout.

Swamp Rabbit Cafe, Greenville

Start the trail at Falls Park in downtown Greenville. There are many great stops along the trail where you can take a break and enjoy coffee, lunch, or a local beer. A local favorite is Swamp Rabbit Cafe, accessible by car or bicycle. Here, you’ll find local produce and goods, but the cafe is also a great place to sit outside and enjoy breakfast or lunch.

The Commons is also a nice stop for a break and is located next to Unity Park. Here, you’ll find local restaurants serving everything from coffee and barbecue to tapas and beer.

Indulge in Greenville’s Gastronomy

Last but certainly not least is the fantastic food scene in Greenville. From Southern staples like shrimp and grits to international fare, you’ll find it all here. To try multiple places in a short time, book a tour with Foothills Foodie Tours, which will take you downtown on foot for tastes from local restaurants. I booked this tour, and in addition to the tasty eats, I really enjoyed learning about Greenville’s facts and history.

Another way to access multiple local chefs in one place is to visit Gather Greenville. Here, you can purchase options from various vendors while dining outside. And yes, Gather is also very pet and kid-friendly!

If you have the chance of visiting in October, I highly recommend attending the Fall for Greenville festival. This foodie fest features over 60 local restaurants and even more live music performances. It is the ultimate experience where you can wander and taste your way across the city.
