The Isle of Skye: Scotland’s Rugged Coastal Escape

The Scottish Highlands are world-famous for their rugged and beautiful landscape. Located in the Highlands, approximately 2.5 hours west of Inverness, is one of Scotland’s most enchanting islands. The Isle of Skye is a hiker’s paradise and so much more to all who are looking for a great adventure.

Getting to Skye

There are many day trips offered to the Isle of Skye from major cities such as Glasgow and Inverness; however, the island is best experienced over multiple days. Plan at least 3 days, although you could easily spend a week or more.

Despite the extensive network of railways in Scotland, the Isle of Skye is remote, with many one-lane roads. The best way to navigate the island is by car (or bicycle if you are feeling very adventurous). Before entering the island, visit the picturesque Eilean Donan Castle. This is one of the world’s prettiest castles, perfectly situated at the intersection of 3 lochs. It offers amazing panoramic views from every angle of the castle.

Portree

Portree is the capital of the Isle of Skye and is a great jumping-off point for access to amazing seafood restaurants. Portree’s marina is also home to many companies offering boat tours to the Isle of Rasaay and the Isle of Rona. Ocean wildlife is abundant here, and on a tour, you are likely to see dolphins, seals, whales, sea eagles, and even puffins (in season).

For a cozy stay walkable to Portree, consider a stay at Viewfield House Hotel. I stayed here during my time on Skye and loved the wood-burning fireplace in the sitting room as well as the traditional Scottish breakfasts every morning.

Connect with Nature

The scenery of the Isle of Skye is best described as rugged, green, and breathtaking. There are multiple ways to experience the scenery. Hike the Old Man of Storr, visit the Fairy Glen, and visit one of the island’s historic castles for enchanting experiences.

Scottish Cuisine

There is no shortage of culinary delights on the Isle of Skye. Fresh seafood caught right in the harbor is served all over the island. Skye smoked salmon is some of the best in the world and is a must-have while you’re here.

Try Scotch

It’s not a proper trip to Scotland without trying some Scotch. Skye pubs have a vast selection of Scotch to taste. There are also distilleries on the main island, as well as one distillery on the Isle of Raasay, just a short boat ride from Portree.
